India hope Virat Kohli will recover from injury to face Pakistan in second ODI

India hope batsman Virat Kohli will recover from a knee injury in time to face Pakistan in the second one-day international on Thursday.

Kohli, who fell for a duck during a rush of early wickets before India recovered to post 227-6, sustained his blow while bowling as the home side fought in vain to avoid defeat in the opening ODI in Chennai.

He had to limp from the field but a scan uncovered no serious damage and an update from The Board of Control for Cricket in India was positive.

A statement from the BCCI's honorary secretary Sanjay Jagdale read: "Virat Kohli, who sustained a foot injury while bowling in the first AIRTEL ODI against Pakistan at Chennai earlier today, underwent an MRI scan after the game.

"All his major ligaments are fine. There is minimal injury fluid in his knee. He will recover after treatment."

The statement on the BCCI website added: "His condition will be monitored, and a decision on whether he will play the second AIRTEL ODI at Kolkata on 3 January 2013, will be taken over the next couple of days."

Pakistan claimed a six-wicket win in Chennai to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Politics, Priorities, Psychology and Hope WITHIN The Black ...

The guest host on the "Mo Ivory Show" talked about how elected officials can't get along and how it harms the interests of the people.

She made a glancing reference to the various county school systems in metro Atlanta who have lost their accreditation as an example of how personal and ideological squabbles harm the public interests.

Most people would accept this claim, disarm and say "OK let's work together".
Being in metro Atlanta allows me to disassemble that argument.

  • Dekalb County GA School System - Probation
  • Clayton County GA School System - Lost Accreditation and got it restored
  • Atlanta Public Schools - Probation

Let me say in passing that all of these school systems are lead by 100% Democrats or a monopoly majority. AGAIN - this is not the centerpiece of my argument.

The talkshow guest went on to enumerate how President Obama's policies and theories match her own and thus she voted for him, and in turn was strongly opposed to President Bush. ?Point well taken.

HOWEVER - when he look at the SYSTEM and how it is true that all three of these problem plagued school systems had individuals just like her, VOTING for what was appealing to them as the proper course to obtain QUALITY EDUCATION for (Black) children - the results, in aggregate do not bear this out.

I have been saying incessantly what is POPULARLY ASSUMED to be the "Best Interests Of The Black Community" cannot, in and of itself, be confirmed as the EFFECTIVE MEANS of producing these desired ends.

When a person, like the radio host starts out with the notion: ?

  • My (progressive) views are correct
  • I am open minded enough to receiving information about a better way of doing it and I will change upon seeing it
  • NO ONE HAS CONVINCED ME YET so I keep investing my valuables.

BUT WAIT! ? ?Why aren't the failures that you just referenced evidence that you are not correct in your assumptions? ??

When the "Mission Accomplished State" is achieved in a metro-area like Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago - those who are entrenched in their beliefs merely "Expand The Police Tape Outward" - finding the RIGHT WING enemy who is made into the "External Variable" that must be defeated before this "social justice" end can be achieved.

The radio host - who I am not sure if she actually lives in metro-Atlanta fails to mention the powerful force of the "Civil Rights Pharisees" that have a strong influence upon the way things work in Atlanta.

Take the model that I mentioned above about the "Mission Accomplished" school systems, municipal governments (executive, legislative, police and judicial) and then note the RESULTS that I mentioned. ?Just because "Black people have been failed" DOES NOT mean that those "favorable people in power" will be protested against.

The "Civil Rights Pharisees" are the force that define "good and evil" (ie: are Black people to be OFFENDED by the actions of the government OR is there a away to generate a "Struggle Motion" against the external right-wing Republicans?).

In recent years the "Civil Rights Pharisees" have conducted more legal and protest action against majority White (Republican controlled ) school systems than they have shown willingness to defend the interests of the parents and students who voted for the school board in the "Mission Accomplished" systems listed above.?

It is not the presence of PROTESTS against their friends in power that would show proof of their even handedness.? My test for their transparency would be for them to identify a model for good governance, lean upon their friends to implement it, clearly communicate to the adults in the community their role in achieving academic success and then measure the results?? Affirm what works and throw out what has failed- firing some people in the process. This includes their own recusal.

Instead we have the notion of "Sharing The Poverty" with the White school systems as the new name for "school busing" - because "racial integration" has fallen into disfavor.? Shamefully only "poor Blacks" are in mind when they talk about the "shared resource" that will get on the bus each morning.?

"The Justice Thurgood Marshall Justice Scheme"

The radio host's model of "Work together" did not mention if SHE AGREED with the findings from the "Southern Association Of Colleges and Schools" on their probation/ loss of accreditation. ? While it is true that in all 3 cases the "dysfunctional school board" and/or sloppy governance was the reason sited for the sanction - the CIVIL RIGHTS PHARISEES ran a "Justice Thurgood Marshall Justice" play in which they PUT THE JUDGE (the system) on trial and deemed the "defendant" a VICTIM (of SACS).

The fact that only "Black school systems" seem to get in trouble with SACS was proof of their RACISM.? The notion that the ANTICS that are allowed among the system leadership that was elected by the parents - who are influenced by the Civil Rights Pharisees was never considered as part of the problem. ?

This is how the promise of "Salvation Through Voting" is squandered within the Black community. ? The rational shift from "Once We Get Favorable People Into Power We Will Prosper" over to "OUR VOICES Are Represented By The People In Power.? We Must PROTECT THEM From This Attack Upon Black People".?

I don't recall Mo Ivory - the Democratic Party delegate standing against the antics of the "Civil Rights Pharisees" to "judge the judge". ? ?I do recall during this recent election, however, she joined the chorus against the "State Charter Schools Initiative" as an attack on BLACK ELECTED OFFICIALS as White people seek to do an end around against their local power by starting their own charter schools.

The point is that the Civil Rights Pharisees are guilty of promoting BLACK ELECTED OFFICIALS over the interests of THE RANK &? FILE. ??

It sounded to me that the talk show guest did this very same thing in acting as the voice of Obama.

Instead of being able to say "The 50 year economic development policies have failed the Black community and thus we have a disproportionate number of people who are unemployed" - she advocated for more Unemployment Insurance and THIS was the adopted "Struggle Motion" against the right-wing that opposes the extension.

The cascading shift toward the "external indictment" while abdicating the "Black Community Governance Culture" where the INVESTMENTS are to be protected as someone stands up and demands a return on investment FROM THE INSTITUTIONS THAT DEVELOP THE PEOPLE rather than from PROGRESSIVE PUBLIC POLICY TRANSFER PAYMENTS - is the biggest damage that is being done to the Black people as so many people go along, affirmed by the POPULARITY of the theories.?

The notion that the "combatants" in the school board have lost sight of their jobs of educating the children, leaving them less prepared to become "Professional Service Providers" for the Black community's uplift - is lost as "The Blacks" function as loyal Democrats.?

auto insurance-45640 | My WordPress Website

auto insurance 45640 We see more cars on the road each year. As this number increases, the possibility of accidents also increases. If you get in a car wreck, the auto insurance you own can make a large difference in the experience you have. But why do you need insurance and just how much do you need? Car accidents can result in many different expenses, which your insurance can pay for based on the insurance policy you own. No matter where you are living, you are required to buy some variety of auto insurance. By not purchasing insurance, you risk having to pay the total cost of the harm or injury you cause others or of repairing or replacing your vehicle if it is damaged or stolen. Liability: This kind of insurance coverage will pay for the damage that you are responsible for. These damages might include personal injury, and property damage. It also covers your legal fees if you are sued. State laws typically mandate standard amounts of liability insurance, but larger amounts are available and extremely helpful. Personal Injury Protection: This type of insurance pays for the medical treatment for you and your passengers, regardless of who was responsible for the accident. It is required in some states and optional in others. The minimum amount of personal injury protection is usually set by local government. Medical Payments: This coverage can be purchased in non-no-fault states; it pays regardless of who may be responsible. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses resulting from a crash. Collision: Pays for damage to your vehicle caused by a collision. Comprehensive: Protect your vehicle from damages from other sources by purchasing this type of insurance. This includes protection from theft, vandalism, and fire or flood damage. Uninsured Motorist: Many drivers are breaking the law by driving a car without having the right amount of auto insurance. This insurance will cover you if you are in an accident with one of these irresponsible drivers. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured motorist protection, this kind of insurance covers you from people driving without sufficient insurance coverage. Other kinds of coverage, like car rental, are also available. Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on multiple factors, including: * Which policies you select * The make and model of the vehicle you drive * Whether or not you have been in an accident * Your age, sex and marital status * Where you live Don?t wait around to buy auto insurance; you shouldn?t drive a car without it. Review your needs, do your research , and with the help of your insurance agent, choose the option that fits you best.

au by KDDI is Japan?s best mobile carrier

Smartphone HolderThis will most likely be the last proper survey for 2012, a look by MMD, Mobile Marketing Data Laboratory, at mobile carrier satisfaction levels, as reported by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

Few demographics were given, just that on the 18th and 19th of December 2012 664 members of the MMD monitor group between the ages of 20 and 59 and who owned a smartphone from either docomo, au or SoftBank completed a private internet-based questionnaire. The results were listed alongside the results of a similar survey from May 2012.

Note that docomo only has seen a significant drop in satisfaction with signal strength and talk area; perhaps one reason is that there has been a number of network outages over the summer, and I still see occassional dropping out of my 3G signal in and around train stations at rush hour.

Research results

Note that the following question was most likely asked as describing how satisified one was, perhaps ?Satisified?, ?Somewhat Satisfied?, ?Can?t say/no answer?, ?Somewhat dissatisfied?, and ?Dissatisfied?. The two percentages for the positive answers were then added together to give the following charts.

4 Easy Methods To Earn Quick Cash Online | Kenny Tan's Blog ...

Sometimes when an unfavorable situation happened to us, we?ll once in a while need an emergency cash to solve some issue that arises. Many people just won?t have any clue on how to generate the kind of instant cash in a short period of time.

In this article, I?ll show you 4 easy methods to earn quick cash online without having to sell your blood to get it.

4 Easy Methods To Earn Quick Cash OnlineBelieve me, it did happens. Sometimes life gives us a quick kick in the teeth and we?re in a situation where we have to earn quick cash to pay off a bill or to make a purchase of some urgent things. Even for people who are new to internet or have no direction on how to make a living online, there are few ways to access the Internet where you actually can generate some quick cash to pay off that bill or make that purchase. Today, you?ll learn how these will pay off within a few days in most cases. Hopefully, you?ll find something here that is just perfect for you to move further.

Method #1
Selling on Ebay. You don?t have to be an ebay powerseller to set up an eBay store or anything like that to get started. You may simply just looking around your house for things that you no longer need or want, then you wrap them up nicely and proceed to open up an eBay and also a PayPal merchant account, next you will need to post an ad on eBay and within a day, you?ll start seeing some sales. You can then transfer the money from your PayPal account to your bank account directly. It only takes a few business days. If you have some great items laying around, you can actually make a nice payday out of it. Many people do this as their main source of income.

Method #2
Write and sell articles. The world of Internet is actually very much needed to run by content. Every site out owned by the webmasters or business owners are hungry getting the content publish on their site. If you can put together an English sentence, then you can write articles to start earning. The number of topics you can write on are virtually unlimited. All you need to do is concentrate on something that you?re more passionate and write about 500 words on it, depending on the requirements of the site, and you can earn anywhere from $3 to $200 per article, depending on the demand for that topic and the site you write for. Most places will make payment within two weeks.

To find places where people are looking for article writer, you may check out:

1.http://www.warriorforum.com ? look for warrior for hire section or members looking to hire you
2.http://forums.digitalpoint.com ? check out the buy, sell & trade section for contents

You may also look at places like:

1.http://voices.yahoo.com/
2.http://www.iwriter.com/
3.http://www.bukisa.com/
4.http://www.constant-content.com/

Method #3
Take part in a focus group. This is not the same as taking surveys. Focus groups do extensive research on whatever topic they are involved in and usually get paid very well for their participation. The pay range is quite great, but most focus groups will pay you at least $50 for your participation and some as much as $500 or more. This again, is something that many people do on a full time basis and making a decent side income from.

Some great places to look for are:

1.http://www.e-focusgroups.com/
2.http://www.focusgroup.com/
3.http://www.focusline.com/
4.http://www.mbsinternet.net/

Method #4
Get hired as a freelancer at places such as Elance.com, VWorker.com, Odesk.com or Fiverr.com. Depending on what your skill is, you can make a quick killing by outsourcing yourself out to somebody looking for something to be done. If you have skill in programming, then you can offer simple programming work to anyone who are looking for a simple job to be done on their site or project. Maybe you have skill in proofreading. If a person is looking for someone to proofread their written workbook, user guide, ebook or even a manuscript, you can make a quick few bucks by doing a proofing work for them. Payment can be made to your PayPal account and again, just like with Ebay, you can have that money in your bank account within a few business days.

The above four easy methods are just the tip of the iceberg to get you the ideas on how to generate some quick cash fast. The Internet is literally filled with plenty opportunities and there are a number of ways to earn quick cash online. Once you are adapted to the these few methods, I am sure you will easily spark up with even more money making ideas in the near future.

from your own site.

ESA Soc of Religion Call for Papers, Turino, 28-31 Aug | SISR ...

The 11th Conference of the European Sociological Association will be held 28-31 August, 2013 in Torino, Italy.

The Research Network Sociology of Religion (RN34) has issued its call for papers.
The call includes joint sessions with Sociology of Culture, Society and Sports, Sociology of Emotions, Qualitative Methods, and Sociology of Migration.
(Visit http://www.esareligion.org/)

Abstract submission opens on 12 December 2012 and closes 1 February 2013.

Call for Papers
RN34 ? Sociology of Religion
Coordinators:

Heidemarie Winkel? hwinkel@uni-potsdam.de
University of Postdam, Germany

Religion has often been understood as a response to personal, social or cultural crisis. Classical scholars, such as Peter L. Berger and Max Weber, pointed out that it provides a theodicy of good and evil ? an account that gives ultimate meaning in a meaningless world. Religions, Stark and Bainbridge (1985) contend, are other-worldly compensators for individuals in crisis ? for those who are deprived from this-worldly rewards. Even advocates of the secularization thesis often acknowledge that crisis and rapid social change in society temporarily motivate the popularity of religion (Bruce 1997).
But religion, once considered to be in crisis under the secularizing powers of modernity, is alive and well in Europe. More than that: religion seems to thrive on what can now be called the crisis of modernity. Modern science, the nation state, capitalism, unrestricted consumption and the globalizing economy, have lost much of their credibility and plausibility in many European countries. In this cultural climate, the voices of traditional religious groups grow louder whereas, some say, we are witnessing a massive turn to holistic forms of spirituality (e.g., Campbell 2007). The atheist-secular worldview is more than ever contested by a fraction of Muslims, Christian creationists, Buddhists and other religious groups while a mirror-like process of anti-identification gives rise to alarmist discourses about the return of religions and particularly on the danger of the ?islamization of Europe?. Religion has once again become salient in the re-formation of identity and the construction of imagined communities: uprooted from tradition, modern individuals in identity crisis search for new (religious) values and meanings whereas some European nation states align themselves with their Christian heritage, long-standing traditions and religious pasts. Religion, then, can not easily be understood as the ?irrational? Other of modernity ? it is instead a common and valid response to the growing crisis of modernity. Jurgen Habermas (2005), once a furious critic of religion, argued from this perspective that intellectuals should include religious partners in the ?rational? conversation about modernity since both share a growing critique on the maladies of modernity.
Motivated by these observations, the Research Network Sociology of Religion calls for papers on crisis, critique and change in relation to religion.

Particularlypapers are welcomed that discuss the following topics:
01RN34.
Studies dealing with religion in crisis, i.e. the way religious traditions such as Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and the like ? re-structure their organizations, beliefs, and practices and adopt, negotiate or resist processes of modernization, secularization and disenchantment.

02RN34.
Studies dealing with the ways religion provides answers to existential crisis and, particularly, the crisis of modernity ? i.e. how and why Islam, Christianity and other religious-spiritual groups formulate a critique of and alternative to modern science, capitalism, mass-consumption and individualism.

03RN34.
Studies dealing with the way crisis increases the salience of religious identities and cultural polarization, i.e., in what particular ways religion gives meaning in everyday life and if, how and why religious identity-formations induce processes of inclusion and exclusion; social cohesion and religious conflict.

04RN34.
Studies focusing on the way religion changes the modern world in Europe and beyond, i.e., how rapid social changes motivate the appeal and popularity of religion and if, how and why such religions transform private and public domains in Europe.

05RN34.

07JS28JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN07 Sociology of Culture and RN28 Society and Sports
Sport and religion/spirituality
(Chairs: Davide Sterchele; Stef Aupers & Hubert Knoblauch)

Whereas the analogy between sport and religion has been criticized by many scholars mainly because of the lack (or low relevance) of the transcendent dimension in traditional sport practices, the recent sociological elaborations of the concept of spirituality seems to provide new interesting tools for interpreting the emerging forms of bodily movement. At the same time, the study of the analogies between traditional sports and institutionalized religions still generates relevant sociological insights.

In order to contribute to these streams of analysis and to open new horizons for further studies, the ESA research networks ?Sociology of Culture?, ?Society and Sports?, and ?Sociology of Religion?, invite potential contributors to submit abstracts to the joint session on ?Sport and religion/spirituality?. The session will thus provide a forum for exchange and sharing among sociologists of culture, sport and religion, who deal with these themes from different but overlapping perspectives.

RN34 web-page : http://www.esareligion.org/ 07JS34.
RN34 Joint session with RN07 Sociology of Culture Cultures of Religion ? Religious Cultures (Chairs: Hubert Knoblauch & Regine Herbrik) ?Religious Culture is quite frequently used, particularly in the French context (?culture religieuse?) relating both, to the general as well as to the specific religious patterns of culture. It may serve well not only to address empirical questions concerning the increasing cultural significance of religion within Europe as well as globally; it may also connect recent theoretical approaches in the sociology of culture on the one hand with approaches in the sociology of religion. For the joint session we invite, therefore, contributions addressing both empirical as well as theoretical issues concerning ?religious cultures?.

11JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN11 Sociology of emotions Affects and Emotions in the Field of Religion (Chairs: Stef Aupers & C?cile Vermot) Generations of scholars of theology and religious studies have viewed affects, emotions, and religion as closely related issues. What can be said about the certain shapes, characteristics and forms of this relationship in present times? How far is the research on emotions especially crucial for the understanding of religious life in Europe and for the coexistence, or even living together, of different confessions? What role do ?emotional regimes? (Riis/Woodhead) or ?feeling rules? (Hochschild) play with regard to the formation of emotional cultures both in religious groups and communities and with regard to the quest for salvation or spirituality of individual persons?

20JS34. RN34 Joint session with RN20 Qualitative Methods Qualitative Research on Religion(Chairs: Regine Herbrik & Bernt Schnettler) We also encourage participants to present papers concerned with methodological questions related to the specific problems of empirical research in the Study of Religions. Can we transfer methods from other fields of research to the sociology of religion or do we need special, field-specific methods? What can we learn from methods used in neighbouring disciplines? Which sets of methods can be recommended for empirical analyses targeting micro-macro issues in understanding religion? What role does the gender issue play in this? We are especially interested in papers reporting empirical research finding in the sociology of religion using qualitative research methods in combination with methodological reflections.

34JS35. RN34 Joint session with RN35 Sociology of Migration Migrant religions as a challenge to European identities (Chairs: Berta Alvarez-Miranda & Heidemarie Winkel) Already in classical sociological theory, religion functioned as a looking glass of change in times of crisis. At present, migrant religions are challenging and contributing to a critique of European identities. How do various European contexts accommodate migrant religions? What are the experiences, attitu?des and demands of their followers? How does the treatment of matters related to Islam inform on European identities and their current transformations? What conceptual and empirical tools does socio?logical analysis offer for the understanding of the varieties of internal and external religious critique?

203K Loans For Buying Property Or Home Improvement: Knowing ...

George Sterling | Friday, December 28th, 2012

203K loans are popular as they allow individuals to borrow financial funds for improvement as well as ownership of a house by only taking one loan. 203K loans are issued by the Federal Housing Administration. 203K Loans typically come with a lower interest rate. Moreover, the terms of paying back the loan varies from 15-30 years.

Basics To Know About 203K Loans

203K loans are best suitable for individuals in the United States who are seeking to buy a house or remodel their existing house but need finance to do so. 203K Loans are also referred to as ?fixer? or ?rehab loans?. Through these types of loans, one cannot only fund finance new homes but also acquire them for home improvement projects. The most important thing to know about the 203K Loan is that it is issued in the form of one loan and not separate loans.

With two different loans, there is a lot of hassle involved such as hassle of paper work, cost, payment of interest and more. Two loans come with a greater price as compared to single loans. With single loans, the interest payments that will have to be made back by the loan taker will typically be low as a result of which, the act of paying back the loan and maintaining your credit history will become a relatively easier task.

203K Loans are offered at competitive rates as a result of which, they make a reasonable choice of selection as loans for home improvement or buying homes altogether. The Federal Housing Administration issues the 203K Loans for single to four unit properties but condo owners as well as townhome owners can also use them to enhance the looks of their properties. The 203K Loans offer nearly 110percent in loans of the speculated value of the property in question, after improvement. The minimum value of finance that is offered is $5,000 but the FHA permits users to take up smaller projects that permit facilitation of easy payment processes.

Another thing to note about 203K loans is that it is mandatory to complete the work in 6 months of closing and if the project reaches more than its expected amount, more amounts will be inserted in the total. Experts advise against padding up the total cost of loan, which occurs in the case when total amount of loan exceeds the cost of improvement or the new property itself and therefore, it is always recommended to hire a reputable contractor who can provide you with accurate estimates.

Broader background checks and denial criteria could help prevent mass shooting catastrophes, experts say

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Garen Wintemute, a leading authority on gun violence prevention and an emergency medicine physician at UC Davis, believes broader criteria for background checks and denials on gun purchases can help prevent future firearm violence, including mass shooting catastrophes such as those that occurred at Sandy Hook, Aurora, Virginia Tech and Columbine.

"To reduce the number of deaths and injuries from firearms in the United States, we need to develop policies that require background checks for all firearm purchases, including private-party sales -- the most important source of firearms for criminal buyers and others who are prohibited from purchasing guns," said Wintemute, director of the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and inaugural Susan P. Baker-Stephen P. Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at UC Davis.

"We need to prevent individuals with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime, such as assault and battery, from purchasing or possessing a firearm. We also need to develop better data and criteria that allow us to distinguish between those with a treatable mental disorder who do not have a history of violence from those with a history of violence or substance abuse," he said.

Wintemute's views posted on the Online First section of the New England Journal of Medicine website as a Perspective article, entitled "Tragedy's Legacy," on December 26, 2012. It also will appear in the journal's January 31, 2013 print edition.

According to Wintemute, the United States represents only 5 percent of the world's population, but it owns more than 40 percent of all firearms that are in civilians' hands. In addition, he believes that policies governing gun purchases and use have allowed the widest possible array of firearms to be available to the widest group of people, for use under the widest array of conditions. Wintemute specifically cites the "Stand Your Ground" laws, enacted at the state level, as dangerous experiments that have been used to legitimize shootings that once were considered to be murder.

Wintemute emphasizes taking a broad approach.

"It may be impossible to predict the next mass shooting incident, and we cannot expect interventions designed for specific circumstances to eliminate the risk of firearm violence. But we can change our firearms laws, based on existing evidence, to reduce harm and better ensure public safety," he said.

"Some 40 percent of all firearm transactions, for example, involve private-party sellers, who are not required to keep records and cannot obtain a background check," Wintemute said. "We need policies that prevent these quick, anonymous and undocumented sales. We also need policies that deny gun purchases to those who we know are at high risk for violence."

Wintemute's research has shown that among persons who purchase firearms legally, those with a previous conviction for a misdemeanor violent crime are roughly nine times as likely as those with no criminal history to be arrested for a violent crime later. For those with two or more such prior convictions, he found the risk increases by a factor of 10 to 15. In addition, studies have shown that firearm owners who abuse alcohol are more likely than other owners to engage in violence-related firearm behavior.

"We know that comprehensive background checks and expanded denial criteria are feasible and effective, because they are in place in many states and have been evaluated," Wintemute said. "In California, the denial policy reduced the risk of violence and firearm-related crime by 23 percent among those whose purchases were denied. But we need to broaden these and other effective state-level regulations to eliminate the flow of firearms from states where laws are lax to states where laws are stricter."

Wintemute also notes that proposals for comprehensive background checks and denials for misdemeanor violence and for alcohol abuse enjoy broad public support, including among firearm owners. Survey data come from Wintemute's own research as well as a series of public polls conducted for the Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

"While the individual circumstances of the mass shooting massacres in the U.S. are different, we can only change the outcome if we confront the challenge of unchecked and easy access to firearms," Wintemute said. "Strengthening our background check and denial policies for firearm purchases will not eliminate firearm violence, but they can reduce it."

PFT: Jets' McElroy hid concussion symptoms

CaldwellAP

A decade ago, Cyrus Mehri and the late Johnnie Cochran demonstrated that the NFL was doing a poor job of giving African-American coaches fair opportunities to progress to the highest levels of the sport.? Mehri and Cochran made such a compelling case that the NFL installed the ?Rooney Rule,? which requires at least one minority candidate to be interviewed for every head-coaching vacancy.

Today, only a minority of head coaching jobs are filled by members of minority groups, with five African-American head coaches (Marvin Lewis, Mike Tomlin, Romeo Crennel, Lovie Smith, Leslie Frazier) and one Hispanic head coach (Ron Rivera).? That?s six, out of 32.

As Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports explains, only one of 32 teams has an offensive play-caller who also is African-American.? And as of a few weeks ago, the number was zero; Jim Caldwell inherited those duties in Baltimore once Cam Cameron was fired.

?We are very, very conscious of this issue, and it?s something that needs to be addressed,? John Wooten, chairman of the Fritz Pollard Alliance, told Silver. ?We have alluded to it and spoken to it directly, and we feel our only course of action is to push more people up the pipeline.?

And that seems to be the biggest problem.? African-American coaches aren?t being positioned to naturally mature into the role of play-caller on offense.?Really, the reason why there aren?t a lot of guys calling plays is that you have to have people ascending to quarterbacks coach and jobs that lead to coordinator positions.? And that?s simply not happening,? Bengals coach Marvin Lewis told Silver.? ?There are a lot of good coaches who aren?t getting those opportunities.?

As Silver points out, only two NFL quarterbacks coaches are African-American:? Karl Dorrell of the Texans and Craig Johnson of the Vikings.? Curtis Modkins serves as offensive coordinator in Buffalo, but head coach Chan Gailey calls the plays.

?This is the biggest travesty that?s taking place in this league, and every black coach is well aware of it,? an anonymous African-American assistant for an AFC team told Silver.? ?They don?t promote you from running backs coach or receivers coach to offensive coordinator.? When guys do get coordinator titles, they have to be position coaches at the same time, and they don?t get paid as much as other coordinators, because they?re not the play-callers.? And in a lot of cases, guys believe they?re really there for locker-room reasons, to ?take care of? the minority players.?

Eventually, the absence of a pipeline of African-American offensive minds will make it hard to find viable African-American head coaches, since all current minority head coaches have defensive backgrounds.

?The whole thing we have to do in terms of building this pipeline is make teams more conscious of the fact that [position coaches] want to get involved,? Wooten said. ?I tell these running backs, receivers and quarterbacks coaches, ?Go to the head coach and general manager and tell them you want this as an opportunity to learn.?? You learn by being in game plan meetings, when plays are being installed.? You listen and learn.?

Real change may come only if the Rooney Rule, which since its adoption has been extended to G.M. positions, is also applied to coordinator jobs.? However, Wooten isn?t recommending that.

?I just feel that the head coach has to have the right to select his people,? Wooten said.? ?If they can?t see who?s the best out there for them, they?re gonna perish anyway.?

Wooten is right, but the Rooney Rule doesn?t require minority candidates to be hired.? It only requires them to be considered, an important reality given that head coaches immediately tap into their network of friends, cronies, and (sometimes) family members when filling out their staffs.? If nothing else, requiring coaches to interview at least one minority coordinator candidate will help position coaches become better prepared to interview for coordinator positions ? and eventually to get them.

In the end, it?s a simple analysis.? If the NFL believes the Rooney Rule remains viable ten years later when the number of minority head coaches has expanded to six, the NFL should take a hard look at whether the Rooney Rule should be applied one level lower, given that the number of minority play-callers is one and, as of the first of the current month, it was zero.

We Should Do More Things For Social Crime - News and Society

When you hear of sex crime most people think that to be of such a crime, DNA, witnesses and other physical evidence that can be used in court would be needed but this is not always the case. Sex crime charges only require a defendant to file a complaint and you can find yourself in court facing these charges.

Educate students to talk freely about relationship issues a student who has been caught under abusive relationship may be reluctant to talk about it. Educate students to talk about relationships freely so that they can help each other, in identifying an abusive relationship and taking corrective steps. Teach them about traits and behavior patterns of a victim in abusive relationship. It is noteworthy that most young people have a sense of what?s abusive. They must be further educated about abusive and healthy relationships and how to deal with the former. It is for this reason that you need a sex crime attorney Cleveland that understands that losing your case is not an option because of the repercussions that come with being found guilty. The penalties for the sex crimes vary from one state to another and your lawyer should inform you on the penalties that you are facing in case you are found guilty. Some of the common sex crime charges include rape, child molestation, sexual battery and solicitation.

Leave the abusive relationship you deserve better. Most of young women take up to a year to leave their relationships. If you feel you have been caught in an abusive relationship, get out of it. You deserve better and you will get it. The longer you stay in the relationship, you make you suffer more. If you meet these questions about crime, you can ask criminal lawyer and compensation lawyer for help, and compensation lawyer will deal with your personal rights well, you cannot ignore the importance of compensation lawyer.

A Christmas Miracle: Packaging Is Less Infuriating

Clamshell Packaging

Traditional clamshell packaging is cheap, deters theft, and it shows off a product on a crowded shelf

Every day delivery men show up at my door bearing loads of new things. Some of it is stuff I?ve purchased online, but most of the boxes contain tech products that companies have sent me to review. Because I send all this stuff back when I?m done assessing it?and because I like to have the option to return stuff I?ve purchased?I open all my boxes in a very persnickety way. I crack into consumer packaging like a surgeon handling a body on the table. I never, ever want to rip or cut open a package in a way that leaves it impossible to put back together again. Instead I try to make as few cuts as possible, always following the package?s subtle cues to find a way to gently coax the contents out of the box. When I stop to think about it, the amount of care and energy I expend on opening consumer merchandise is probably some kind of sad commentary on our society. Luckily, with all these boxes to open, I don?t have much time to stop to think about it.

I?m telling you all this as a way of bolstering my credentials to make a claim you?ll likely find hard to swallow. Considering how many packages I open, I?ve become a kind of expert on how consumer goods are wrapped. And over the past year, I?ve noticed something amazing: Packaging is getting better. More and more of our products are packed in containers that are well-designed; environmentally friendly; and, best of all, don?t require a rage-inducing, teeth-grinding Herculean struggle to open. (See this Larry David video for an example.) A few years ago, you?d spend many long, frustrating minutes on Christmas morning trying to get stuff out of boxes. This year I bet you spent less time puzzling over packages. I also bet you hardly noticed that many of your packaging woes had been solved?if you became red-faced, it was from trying to crack into the one or two remaining impenetrable plastic clamshells under your tree.?

That?s the package designer?s lament: The only time most of us notice packaging is when it?s terrible. When you find something difficult to open?especially something urgent, like your kid?s toy?it?s hard not to feel like the world is against you. Then you go to Twitter and write something like: ?Designers of kid's toy packaging are literally the worst people in our society. How can we fix this? Ideas? Send them back to Nazi Germany?? Or: ?Seriously, there should be a special place in hell for the person who designed toy packaging.? Or: ?This is a great gift. I wish I could get it open somehow!?

But bad packaging is now becoming the exception rather than the norm. Since 2008, some of the world?s largest retailers and consumer-product companies have launched initiatives to improve how their goods are boxed. Amazon.com?s program, called ?frustration-free packaging,? now counts more than 70,000 products that ship in recyclable boxes ?without excess packaging materials such as hard plastic clamshell casings, plastic bindings, and wire ties.? Wal-Mart has pledged to reduce packaging by 5 percent between 2008 and 2013. It?s well on the way to that goal; among other things, the company worked with manufacturers to eliminate a billion feet of wire twist ties from its toys in 2011. If you?ve every tried to open these wire ties?which aren?t recyclable?you understand what a terrible pain they are. Instead, I?ve noticed more and more toys that are secured with easy-to-snip ?paper string,? or even easier recyclable plastic locks, which ask you to simply turn a little key 90 degrees to release the toy from its box?no scissors required. (See page 17 in this technical document for a picture.)

As far as I can tell, these initiatives are working. Yes, my assessment is woefully unscientific?Jack Shafer is sure to smite me for relying on the old ?numbers are hard to come by? journalistic hedge. There?s no agency that tracks how consumer goods are packaged. Some packaging industry analysts suggest that the use of ?high-visibility packaging? (including clamshells) is on the rise, but there?s no way to know how many of these are new, easy-to-open clamshells and how many are the classic, finger-slicing variety.

Yes, a few impossible, scissor-resisting packages entered my home this year. Among these was a Logitech mouse, a BodyMedia fitness tracker, an automotive fluid-transfer pump, and Apple?s new Earpod headphones. (You?ll need a hammer to crack open the hard plastic box.) Nine out of 10 products I encountered, though, were a snap to open.

This is surprising. The traditional, impossible clamshell has a lot going for it. It?s cheap, it deters theft (you can?t slip open the package and pocket something), and it shows off a product on a crowded shelf. The clamshell?s disadvantages, meanwhile, are all borne by consumers and the environment?and only after people have purchased the products?so companies have little direct incentive to improve things.

And yet they?re doing just that: The clamshell is rare, and soon it will be dead. Joy to the world!

New MRI method may help diagnose dementia

Dec. 26, 2012 ? A new way to use MRI scans may help determine whether dementia is Alzheimer's disease or another type of dementia, according to new research published in the December 26, 2012, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) often have similar symptoms, even though the underlying disease process is much different.

"Diagnosis can be challenging," said study author Corey McMillan, PhD, of the Perelman School of Medicine and Frontotemporal Degeneration Center at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. "If the clinical symptoms and routine brain MR are equal, an expensive positron emission tomography (PET) scan might be needed. Or, a lumbar puncture, which involves inserting a needle into the spine, would be needed to help make the diagnosis. Analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid gives us reliable diagnostic information, but this is not something patients look forward to and is also expensive. Using this new MRI method is less expensive and definitely less invasive."

The study involved 185 people who had been diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease consistent with Alzheimer's disease or FTLD and had a lumbar puncture and a high resolution MRI. Of the 185, the diagnosis was confirmed in 32 people either by autopsy or by determining that they had a genetic mutation associated with one of the diseases.

Researchers used the MRIs to predict the ratio of two biomarkers for the diseases in the cerebrospinal fluid, the proteins tau and beta-amyloid. The MRI prediction method was 75 percent accurate at identifying the correct diagnosis in those with pathology-confirmed diagnoses and those with biomarker levels obtained by lumbar punctures, which shows similar accuracy of the MRI and lumbar puncture methods.

"Developing a new method for diagnosis is important because potential treatments target the underlying abnormal proteins, so we need to know which disease to treat," McMillan said. "This could be used as a screening method and any borderline cases could follow up with the lumbar puncture or PET scan. This method would also be helpful in clinical trials where it may be important to monitor these biomarkers repeatedly over time to determine whether a treatment was working, and it would be much less invasive than repeated lumbar punctures."

The study was supported by the Wyncote Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

23 Dec

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Private picture of Mark Zuckerberg's family leaked

SEATTLE (AP) ? Even Mark Zuckerberg's family can get tripped up by Facebook's privacy settings.

A picture that Zuckerberg's sister posted on her personal Facebook profile was seen by a marketing director, who then posted the picture to Twitter and her more than 40,000 followers Wednesday.

That didn't sit well with Zuckerberg's sister, Randi, who tweeted at Callie Schweitzer that the picture was meant for friends only and that posting the private picture on Twitter was "way uncool." Schweitzer replied by saying the picture popped up on her Facebook news feed.

The picture shows four people standing around a kitchen staring at their phones with their mouths open while Mark Zuckerberg is in the background.

Randi Zuckerberg, who used to run Facebook's marketing department and now produces a reality television show, eventually said Schweitzer was able to see the picture because they had a mutual friend. Those tweets have since been taken down.

Schweitzer declined to comment when reached by The Associated Press. Randi Zuckerberg didn't reply to a message via Twitter seeking comment.

Randi Zuckerberg used the dustup to write about online sharing etiquette.

"Digital etiquette: always ask permission before posting a friend's photo publicly. It's not about privacy settings, it's about human decency," she posted on Twitter.

But Randi Zuckerberg's comments sparked sharp reactions from people who thought the issue wasn't about etiquette, but rather Facebook's often changing and often confusing privacy settings.

"The thing that bugged me about Randi Zuckerberg's response is that she used her name as a bludgeoning device. Not everyone has that. She used her position to get it taken it down," said Eva Galperin of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a privacy advocacy group in San Francisco.

While Facebook has made improvements in explaining the social network's privacy settings, Galperin said they remain confusing to most people. She added that with people using Facebook as part of their everyday lives, the consequences of fumbling privacy settings can become serious.

"Even Randi Zuckerberg can get it wrong. That's an illustration of how confusing they can be," she said.

The Menlo Park, Calif., company recently announced it is changing its privacy settings with the aim of making it easier for users to navigate them.

The fine-tuning will include several revisions that will start rolling out to Facebook's more than 1 billion users during the next few weeks and continue into early next year.

The most visible change ? and perhaps the most appreciated ? will be a new "privacy shortcuts" section that appears as a tiny lock at the top right of people's news feeds. This feature offers a drop-down box where users can get answers to common questions such as "Who can see my stuff?"

But Galperin said Wednesday's incident also illustrates a general concern about Internet privacy. Essentially, she said, if you share information or a photo with your social network, people in your network have the ability to share that with whomever else they choose.

The mobile photo-sharing service Instagram, which is owned by Facebook Inc., had to answer to backlash to privacy concerns recently when new terms of service suggested user photos could be used in advertisements. The company later said it would remove the questionable language.

From LEDs to touchscreens: How technology is changing ...

Tesla Model S sedan

When it comes to the way a car looks, what's under the skin can be just as important as the skin itself.

We expect a lot from our cars. We expect them to protect us and the planet, all while performing the tasks of everyday life for years and hundreds of thousands of miles. However, we don?t notice a car?s safety features, fuel economy, or reliability until after we see what it looks like.

Automotive styling has always been a matter of taste, but like the more objective categories of automotive excellence, it changes with times and technology. Advancements in aerodynamics and materials, safety regulations, and the ever-increasing amount of tech we expect in cars is changing the way they look.

2012-bmw-6-series-gran-coupe-passenger-side-profileForm and function

In the beginning, automotive stylists essentially had free reign. Cars came as bare, ladder-frame chassis prepped for separate bodies constructed like horse-drawn carriages. Things are very different now.

The modern unibody (an integrated chassis and body) means the general shape of a car is often determined by the engineers, not the stylists. Concerns over aerodynamic efficiency and safety also limit what can be done to a car?s shape. Pointy tail fins and thin A-pillars are out.

That hasn?t stopped designers from penning good looking cars; gorgeous lines can be found on everything from the Aston Martin Vanquish to the Kia Optima. However, these impressive machines are more than just pretty faces.

New cars come with a lot of cameras: rearview cameras are a popular option, and Subaru uses a forward-facing camera for its EyeSight automatic braking system. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is planning to make rearview cameras mandatory on new cars, possibly by the 2015 model year.

It might seem like the NHTSA is making back windows redundant, but that?s because they?ve been shrinking in the name of safety and style. Thicker pillars and side surfaces are becoming necessary to pass crash tests, so the area available for glass is shrinking. In addition, raising the hood for pedestrian safety requires designers to raise the belt line (where a car?s windows meet the doors).

Raising the roof (line) would make an already bloated car look pretty dorky, but doing the opposite makes for a very sexy ride. Just compare the BMW 5 Series with the 6 Series Gran Coupe: they?re essentially the same car underneath and are differentiated only by styling. Or compare the staid Honda Accord with the streamlined Hyundai Sonata. With rearview cameras available, designers don?t have to worry as much about creating blind spots with those low rooflines.

Alternative powertrains also hold the possibility of exciting new shapes. Almost 10 years ago, General Motors built the Autonomy and Hy-Wire hydrogen fuel cell concepts. They had a ?skateboard? chassis that contained the fuel cells and electric motors, and had drive-by-wire controls. That meant, theoretically, that designers could draw any shape they wanted and bodies could be interchangeable.

Today, we don?t have hydrogen cars, but at least one battery-electric car is applying the same principles. The Tesla Model S has its batteries in the floor, and its electric motor tucked between the rear wheels. That means what looks like a curvaceous ?four door coupe? is actually quite roomy, with rear-facing jump seats for kids and a large front trunk for luggage. It also has an incredibly low 0.24 coefficient of drag.

2011 Audi A8 European spec front viewSignature style

However, the electric car presents automotive designers with a problem. Since before automotive styling existed, the radiator grille has been most car companies? trademark. BMW?s twin kidney and Dodge?s crosshair are synonymous with their brands, and Lexus hopes its new spindle grille will be someday too. At the very least, the grille is the best place to put a badge.

The problem is this: electric cars don?t have radiators, so they don?t need grilles. In fact, having a hole in the front of the car can be a disadvantage in cars that need to be as aerodynamic as possible to maximize range.

The fish-faced Nissan Leaf is a good example. Instead of a grille, there?s a charging port behind the Nissan badge on the front end. The Honda Fit lost its black mesh grille when it was converted to an EV, while the Chevrolet Volt has a large, nonfunctional, grille that exists purely as a styling element.

The grille may outlive the internal combustion engine, but there is another possibility. Audi received a lot of criticism when it introduced its current shield-shaped grille, but most of that criticism subsided when designers added LED ?eyelash? driving lights.

Now, even the lowly Nissan Sentra has a strip of LEDs running through its headlights. That?s because LEDs can be arranged in different shapes, creating a distinct presence when the sun goes down. One example: the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class ditches the 2013 model?s quad headlights for two, but the outline of the old four-eyes look can be seen in the lighting elements.

Interior: Domain of the touch screen

?Count the number of buttons in your car. Now, count the number of buttons on your tablet,? Cadillac tells viewers in a commercial for its Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment system. If alternative powertrains are changing the shape of cars, connectivity is changing the layout of their interiors.

It?s hard not to notice the screens that have sprouted from dashboards. Some are just for showing GPS-generated maps, while others are touch screens that actually control functions like audio, settings for adjustable suspensions, and climate control. Phone connectivity is also a must for the tech-obsessed, because it allows them to use their phones while driving or play their music libraries through the stereo.

So far, no one has come up with a particularly elegant way to integrate all of these functions. Every carmaker uses a combination of buttons, voice controls, and touch screens, with the occasional click wheel thrown in (see BMW iDrive). However, the buttons are either too numerous, or the alternatives too complex.

That brings us back to Cadillac: Why not just make a dashboard that looks like a tablet? CUE and other systems look like giant tablets, but this is a case of form beating function; most infotainment systems take some practice to learn, since users can?t rely on muscle memory like they do with analog controls.

Still, eager to attract tech-savvy buyers, car interior designers are increasingly looking to smartphones and tablets for inspiration. The Tesla Model S? interior sports a 17-inch touch screen and virtually nothing else, while cars like the Chevy Volt feature center stacks trimmed in white or piano black plastic to make them look like Apple?s best.

The phrase ?form over function? is usually associated with car exteriors, but it?s becoming increasingly relevant to interiors. A slick, button-less cockpit like the Model S? reminds potential buyers of their favorite devices, but it may not be the most effective way to do the job.

Does it look good?

For better or worse, technology is having a major affect on automotive styling. Whether it?s the push of safety equipment or the pull of alternative powertrains and their flexible packaging, interior ergonomics or flashy displays, the tech underneath the skin is defining its shape. On top of all that, car designers still have to make sure their creations are pleasing to the eye.
